The National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) is a new national safety designation designed to replace a number of similar provincial designations. It was approved by the Canadian Federation of Construction Safety Association after several years of discussion and consultation with stakeholders across the country. In BC, it will replace the Construction Safety Specialist (CSS), currently offered by the BCCSA.
The primary objective of this program is to recognize individuals who possess construction safety knowledge and skills through a combination of entry-level safety training and field experience.
A (NCSO) is a person who understands basic regulatory requirements and how they apply to a construction site so workers, members of the public and the environment function safely.
This designation indicates that the individual has knowledge in various construction-related health & safety management skills and principles. When a person completes this program, they are ready to begin the career-long process of becoming a leader in construction safety.
The requirement to obtain an NCSO designation is by completing a variety of training courses, have 3 years of construction field experience and pass a National and Provincial Exam. An NCSO is a valuable resource for management in the administration and implementation of an organization’s Health & Safety Program.
An individual may start their application at any time and update the information as they complete the requirements. There is no timeframe to complete the application however any courses with an expiry date must be valid at the time of submission.
Once all of the information is complete and you are ready to submit your application, you will be required to agree to the Terms of Participation and the Code of Ethics. The cost to submit your application is $125.00 + GST (non-refundable).
The review time to process your application is 3-4 weeks. If your application is accepted, you will receive an email outlining your options to complete the National and Provincial Exams. If your application is not accepted, you will receive information on the additional qualifications you require.
To maintain your designation, you must complete six (6) class hours of professional development every 3 years, submit a proficiency assignment, and provide documented proof of continued work in the construction industry and maintain all certifications.
